Electrical fundamentals

The basic electrical concepts that underlie how grounding sheets work and how to verify they're functioning.

Body Voltage: the electrical potential between your body and earth ground, measured in volts AC. This is the primary measurement used to verify whether a grounding sheet is actually working.

Induced AC Voltage: the electrical charge that builds up in your body from nearby AC wiring through capacitive coupling, even without direct contact. Grounding sheets work by providing a path for this charge to dissipate to earth.

Ohms (Ω): the unit of electrical resistance. Lower ohms mean better conductivity. New grounding sheets read 2-15 ohms; aged or failing sheets read above 25 ohms.

Multimeter: the testing tool used to verify both body voltage drop and grounding sheet resistance. A $20 multimeter is the most useful single investment for grounding sheet users.

AWG (American Wire Gauge): the system for measuring electrical wire diameter. Relevant for grounding cord wires (typically 22-26 AWG) and ground rod connections (6-14 AWG).

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter): a safety device that protects against electrical shock. GFCI outlets aren't the same as grounded outlets, and a GFCI without a true ground wire won't ground your sheet.

Grounding infrastructure

The hardware that connects your grounding sheet to actual earth.

Three-Prong Outlet: the standard US grounded outlet with hot, neutral, and ground slots. The third hole is what connects your grounding sheet to earth, when the wiring behind it is actually grounded.

Ground Rod: a copper-coated steel rod driven into soil to provide a direct earth ground reference. The practical alternative to ungrounded outlets in old houses, apartments, and RVs.

Snap Connector: the metal stud on a grounding sheet that connects to the cord. The most common point of failure in grounding products, and worth understanding to extend product life.

Inline Resistor: the 100,000-ohm safety resistor built into every properly designed grounding cord. Critical for fault protection, and worth verifying is present in any cord you buy.

Conductive Thread: the woven or knit conductive material that gives a grounding sheet its function. Material choice (silver, stainless steel, carbon) is the most important spec in any grounding product.

Conductive materials

The specific materials used in different grounding sheet products and their tradeoffs.

Silver Fiber: the most common conductive material in mainstream grounding sheets. High initial conductivity, but tarnishes over time, with typical lifespan of 18-30 months.

316L Stainless Steel: medical-grade stainless steel used in surgical implants and premium grounding sheets. Doesn't tarnish, maintains conductivity for 3-5+ years.

Carbon Fiber Fabric: synthetic carbon-based conductive material used in Earthing.com and Ultimate Longevity products. Doesn't oxidize, long lifespan, typically integrated as separate mattress cover.

Organic Cotton (and GOTS Certification): the base fabric in most grounding sheets. GOTS is a stricter certification covering processing chemicals throughout the supply chain.

Earthing: the practice of conductive earth contact, used roughly interchangeably with "grounding" in wellness contexts. The original term used by Clint Ober and the early grounding research base.

Grounding Therapy: the proposed wellness practice of using earth contact to potentially modulate inflammation, sleep, and stress markers. Research base, mechanism theories, and mainstream medical perspective.

EMF (Electromagnetic Field): electromagnetic fields from electrical and electronic equipment. What grounding sheets actually reduce versus what they don't, and the EMF concerns context.

Dirty Electricity: high-frequency voltage transients on home electrical wiring. Whether it matters for health is contested; grounding sheets don't specifically filter it.

Mu-Metal: a specialized nickel-iron alloy for magnetic field shielding, sometimes referenced in EMF-shielding marketing. Largely irrelevant to grounding sheet function.
