Silver fiber is conductive thread made of polymer or nylon coated with metallic silver, woven into cotton or other base fabric to create grounding products. Silver fiber is the most common conductive material in mainstream grounding sheets because pure silver has the highest electrical conductivity of any metal.

Silver content varies from 2-25% by weight across different products. Mainstream brands typically use 5-10%. Budget products often advertise higher percentages that may not be accurate. Premium products can reach 22-25% or higher for products like Groundology's pure silver fabric.
Silver fiber thread itself is composed of approximately 18-22% silver by weight (the rest is the polymer or nylon core that provides structural strength). This fiber is then woven with cotton at the percentage advertised on the product. So a "10% silver content" sheet contains approximately 18-22% × 10% = 2-2.5% silver by total weight.
Aging behavior:
Silver oxidizes when exposed to skin oils, sweat, sulfur compounds in air and detergent, and chlorinated water. The oxidation product (silver sulfide, Agâ‚‚S) appears as tarnish and is a poor electrical conductor.
A typical silver-fiber sheet's resistance climbs gradually from 2-5 ohms (new) to 15-25 ohms (worn) over 18-30 months of daily use. By 24 months with imperfect care, many sheets are functionally compromised even though they look the same.
Care that extends silver fiber life:
Free-and-clear detergent without optical brighteners.
Cold water washing.
Air drying or low-heat tumble dry.
No bleach, no fabric softener, no chlorinated water exposure.
Independent testing across multiple brands shows 8% conductivity loss by day 30, 15-18% by day 90, and 25-35% by month 12 of daily use.
The "5x longer lifespan" claims for non-tarnishing materials (stainless steel, carbon) compared to silver are roughly accurate for typical use conditions. Silver remains the right choice for short-term trial purchases and the wrong choice for committed long-term use.
