Induced AC Voltage

Induced AC voltage is electrical potential that builds up in your body from nearby AC wiring. How it works and why grounding products reduce it.

Induced AC voltage is the electrical potential that builds up in an object (including the human body) due to capacitive coupling with nearby alternating current sources. Unlike conducted voltage, which requires direct electrical contact, induced voltage transfers through electromagnetic field interactions across air gaps.

In a typical home, the AC wiring in walls, ceiling fixtures, and appliances generates 60 Hz electromagnetic fields (50 Hz in much of Europe and Asia). When you sit, stand, or sleep within these fields, your body acts as an antenna and accumulates induced charge. The result is a measurable AC voltage on your skin even though you're not directly touching any electrical conductor.

Induced AC voltage on the human body in a typical bedroom usually measures 1-5 volts AC, occasionally higher near electrical panels, lamps with metal bases, or wired alarm clocks within arm's reach of the bed. The exact level depends on home wiring quality, distance from active circuits, body size, and humidity (drier conditions allow more buildup).

Grounding sheets work specifically by providing a low-resistance path for induced AC voltage to dissipate to earth. When connected to a grounded outlet, the conductive material in the sheet shares electrical potential with the earth reference, which equalizes your body's potential to near zero relative to ground.

The biological significance of induced AC voltage is contested in mainstream science. The voltage levels are far below thresholds known to cause direct nerve stimulation or tissue damage. Proposed mechanisms for biological effects (interference with cellular electrical signaling, oxidative stress modulation) are biologically plausible but not conclusively demonstrated.

Whether grounding products produce measurable health benefits remains an open research question. What's not contested is that they reliably reduce induced AC voltage when properly used.
